Friday 15 September 2023
New Committee set to tackle issues impacting young people on the Isle of Man
Coinciding with the International Day of Democracy, whose theme this year is ‘Empowering the Next Generation’, on the 15th September, Tynwald will launch their new Youth Select Committee.
Mirroring the current Committees structure of Tynwald and its Branches, the new Youth Select Committee will enable young people across the Island to scrutinise and hold inquiries of topics of interest to them.
The Youth Select Committee will comprise of 5 members ranging from 15 to 24 years of age.
The Clerk of Tynwald’s Office will recruit the young people onto the Select Committee and arrange an induction and training. The Committee will be supported with research and the calling of witnesses through written evidence and a public oral evidence session and will finish the inquiry with a final report to be produced and presented to Tynwald.
Julia Cullen, Engagement Services Executive, said of the launch of the new Youth Select Committee;
“After planning and running the annual Junior Tynwald, it was encouraging to see how passionate young people on the Isle of Man are about the issues they face alongside their peers and the wider community.
We believe that a Youth Select Committee will provide a platform to equip young people with the skills and opportunities to influence changes on the Island, and a signal to young people that their voices matter.”
Speaker of the House of Keys, Juan Watterson SHK added,
“It is important that our youth are given an opportunity to be involved in Manx politics on a regular basis. This initiative will allow a group of young people to come together and investigate an area of their choice and present a report to Tynwald in a similar way to Tynwald Committees. I would encourage anyone aged 15-24 who wishes to have an active say in the future of our Island to come forward and take part in this exciting new project.”
